Cunene PJTC on study visit to Rusumo Construction Project

On July 15, 2022, the Angola-Namibia Joint Technical Commission on the Cunene River Basin (the PJTC) visited the Regional Rusumo Falls Hydroelectric Project; the delegation was headed by Mr. Carolino Mendes from Angola and Simeon Negumbo (Namibia) as co-chair of the PJTC.

The PJTC delegation was received by NELSAP Rusumo Project Management and staff together with the Project’s Owner’s Engineer, AECOM. Project Management took the visitors around the Project’s sites to take stoke of implementation progress.

As PJTC is a binational commission between two countries Namibia and Angola with the responsibility to oversee the joint management of the Cunene River Basin. The PJTC is developing a 600 MW Baynes Hydropower project in the lower Cunene River Basin.

Through the support of the African Development Bank, the JPTC undertook study tour in the region to learn from multi country hydropower projects; Rusumo Project is reach in lesson learnt from preparation to implementation phases to be shared with other same hydro projects, being at about 96% implementation progress.

After the visit, NELSAP PIU discussed with Cunene visitors to share experience, lesson learnt and good practices gathered during life span of the Project, from feasibility studies, institutional set-up, resettlement to date.
